Picnictime for Teddy Bears

it was a pastime for residents to go "watch the bears" at the isolated community where we lived in Northern British Columbia, Canada. This is a Black Bear. sometimes grizzlies came there also, but we avoided those.

The man in car had apples, the bear ambled towards us to get the offered apple, - as it got closer, suddenly standing upright on hind legs. My boyfriend/later DH, took the pic. Didn't realize how tall the bear was, til seeing photo later : ) Am 5' 9" tall, which gives you an idea of bears height. Note hand in bear's mouth. Would I do this again, - who knows - doubt the situation would ever arise

Hi Vicki, you gave me a smile for the morning.

Well, am not so sure I'd be doing the same thing if this happened "today", but at the time it didn't seem so unusual, as we were very used to the black bears coming to our gardens each night to raid the garbage cans, just before time to hibernate each year. But Grizzlies are a different matter.

Gracious, Alandra - you make my bear images look positively "wimpy" after you did something like this! What a great memory.

I did start to approach a huge moose near Wawa, Canada once . . . but when he turned and started casually walking towards me I became 'Chicken Little' and slowly walked backwards to our motorhome! Vicki

LOL, glad you found it, Alan. That wasn't our convertible, belonged to the man sitting in it, who is also long gone now, along with the vehicle. Yeah, that's a great photo to have to "show the grandkids", lol.

WOW!! Your are one wild and crazy gal LOL.. I was checking out your photos and this one caught my eye, then to find out it's you feeding the bear, I'm with Steve "Your Nuts" ROFL... Oh that Convertible Ford is worth a lot of cash now days, still got it? Hey stick to feeding the squirrels and hummers I'll feel a lot better if you do. What a great experience though to have and remember.

it all happened so fast,Beverly, as these things usually do :) - so there was hardly time to think, - just raised my arm as the bear stood up, and gave him/her the apple. We were quite used to the black bears in that northern community, - people always went to that area to watch the bears, who would sit on the smoking embers, without seeming to notice the heat, and lick the honey and jam tins clean (they'd open the big cans with their claws, effortlessly). The empty cans were dumped there by the catering company that cooked for the single men there, who lived in the bunkhouses.

Yes, I understand, running would have been a mistake.

thanks Beverly, now that's really an oldie : ) -- well, I hadn't expected the bear to stand up, as he was walking towards me on all fours, then stood up on hind legs when it got close, so I just had to stand there (and give it the apple) rather than turn and run : )

Very brave of you - but risky. Anyhow, a nice keepsake photo.

Hi again, Gisele, only just noticed your comment on this one, was offline for a couple days, - that's neat that you have also had this same experience of feeding a bear in the wild.

We lived at Kemano, (Alcan) - 5 hours by boat from Kitimat, nearest town. Very isolated, only way in or out is by boat or copter in emergencies. Was in both situations.

Am getting confused, do you live in the Kootenays?

Well girl it's me again.

I had planed to look at all your photos but this one stop me in my tracks.LOLLLL

This is something I did myself once and my husband when seeing me that close screamed at me "are you crazy???" Well the bear jumped and so did I!!!

I told him he was the one who was nuts to scare the bear.

But nothing happened the bear just put his head down and ate what I had in my hand now on the ground of course.

I love bears... he is petrified of them. Not a good combination.

Love your pictures so far will finish looking at them tonight.

Oh tell me where were you in nothern BC?

BRRR...

Looks like a cute lil teddy, that one. But I've seen too many episodes of "When Animals Attack" to believe too much in their 'cute-ness'.

My advice to you...STAY AWAY !!
