Arum Lily

Arum Lily

The Arum Lilies in my garden are just beginning to bloom. They are a special plant to me because they came from a plant that my parents grew in their garden for many years.

This is an old fashioned, but very rewarding garden plant. Zantedeschia is named after Professor Zantedeschi, probably Giovanni Zantedeschi, 1773-1846, an Italian physician and botanist, although there is some uncertainty about this. Although called the arum lily, it is neither an arum ( the genus Arum) nor a lily ( genus Lilium). But it is associated with the lily as a symbol of purity and these elegant flowers have graced many bridal bouquets.

It is an excellent cut flower and lasts a long time in water.

Thanks for viewing. :)

Glad you enjoyed this one Tania. It's very special to me, coming from my Parents garden and I'm so pleased that it seems to be thriving in my garden. :)

Jas you have put a new edge on an old plant. I think anyone would be proud to have this on their wall, I know I would. Fantastic capture

Thanks to everyone for all the nice comments on my Arum Lily, I really appreciate you all taking time to look.

Thanks for the extra info' on the lily, Chriss. No, I didn't know that it was also known as Cuckoo Pint.

Thanks, Paul, for leaving your comments; My lilies are out all winter but they are fairly sheltered.

Alandra, thanks for your comments also. They're not difficult to grow...if I can do it, anyone can! :)

gorgeous image of a gorgeous plant and blooms, Jas. Interesting info also. Have never grown these, think I had the idea that they would be difficult to grow. You've prompted me to buy one, - I love to try different plants in our garden, and bought several new perennials this spring. Can't wait to see the flowers, altho guess they'll be better next summer, once more established. Don't you just love flowers and plants!

Jas,

Thank you for your comment on my Arum Lily photograp and your explanation above. These were my mother's, like the camelias. She died two and a half years ago and I have been looking after them since. Both have bloomed well this year. I did not know one could leave the Arums out during the winter. Perhaps here in Hertfordshire it might not be so wise.

You are right, the blooms are so pure.
