Why did the armadillo cross the road?

I took several photographs of this armadillo next to a bike path before he finally noticed me and fled across the path and into the brush.

They are funny, interesting creatures. This was the first time I had ever seen a live one. I was biking and he was rooting for food at the side of the path. I think they have very poor eye sight, and he didn't even notice me at first. When he finally noticed me, he scurried across the path and bumped headfirst into some bushes trying to escape.
