Do You Know Me?

Even with a 6" wingspan I almost missed this brautiful moth this evening as I started washing my RV to clean it up before tomorrow's trip to Virginia.

It was in the Ocala National Forest near Ocklawaha, Florida - can anyone identify this beautiful creature?

Thank you for that information, Knapperbill. You really know your moths. I'll have to look up a photo of the cecropia moth then. I appreciate your feedback.

Actually, this is not a cecropia moth, but a polyphemus moth. They are very similar, but the plyphemus moth has more distinct "eyes" than the cecropia, and the cecropia is reddish in overall color.

Thank you for the reminder, Al is called andra - and yes - I did indeed find out its name. This beautiful creature is called a cecropia moth - by far the largest I've ever seen - and surprisingly sluggish - but it may have been because it was still daylight out.

I missed this one til now, Vicki. Did you ever find out the name of this moth? It's certainly beautifully marked, just like "eyes". Have never seen a moth of that size.
