Angry Storm

: Angry Storm; I just had told my wife that I hadn't had much luck shooting lightning this year earlier in the day. Sure enough, a beauty cruised by that evening. Conditions were perfect, it was a huge towering storm off in the distance. It skirted by on the North West side of me. I saw it on the radar but figured it would not come anywhere close enough to shoot. I took the dogs out for an evening stroll and saw the distant flashing, grabbed the camera and tripod and watched the most active lightning storm I have ever seen. And did it from a safe distance, I guess it was probably 50 miles away. There were stars above my head as I watched and shot the lightning. Thanks for looking. Hi Carlos from England. Looks like a bunch of us here are lightning fans. You'll get your chance I'm sure. Most of the time I just set my camera on hard manual, ISO 100, f 8.0, and either 30 seconds or bulb. On bulb, I go ahead and close the shutter after I see a strike has crossed the frame. This is on a tripod and a remote shutter button is attached. The shot above is different, the storm was so far away that I was experimenting and shot it at 30 seconds, ISO 320, f 5.6. I was able to do this because the lightning wasn't blinding bright being so far away. Good luck!

Hi Matt. Lightning is a blast isn't it? I shot this from my yard at home. It was unusual to be able to see the storm so far off, doesn't usually happen that way. The conditions were just perfect for it. I know, daytime lightning is a bear and you have to be flat out lucky. I've only managed a few decent day lightning shots. They make a lightning trigger that hooks to the camera and looks like it would be the way to go for daytime lightning, just haven't got one yet. I took a shot of the neighbors house and lightning. It was dusk, but really dark out from the storm. I'll have to post it. Thanks again. Don

Great shot and thanks for the comments on my lightning shots, take care and be careful and I'll keep an eye out for your next lighting shots, summer is nearly here in Australia and that's usually when it lightens up my nights. Have you had any luck in the day, I use bulb mode at night but during the day you'll have to be extremely lucky.

I would just like to say well done on this pic its fantastic you are so lucky to have the oppertunity to take pics such as this one i am from england (the north west) and i have been hopeing for the chance to take pics of lightning all summer but all we have had is thunder and no lightning so i am very gelouse all i can say is wow lucky you and well done im very happy for you!!! keep up with the weather and storms (as it is the mane reson why i even bought my camara but im just in the wrong country unfortunaty lol (sorry about my spelling also) wow great shot! congrats again! any tips you can give me (for when i get my chance i would be very greatfull)
