JPG Magazine closes its doors

JPG Mag sent an email this morning saying that they will be closing their doors and shutting down their site on January 5th.  I know many of you had accounts with them, and it’s a sad day for photographers everywhere when things like this happen. The poor economy is affecting everybody, and we’ll likely see many more companies fold before things get better.

The Lens Flare is alive and healthy because it has an entirely different business model.  Our expenses to keep the site alive and growing are very low.  Even still, we’re going to be moving from our current hosting company to Amazon’s cloud hosting environment within the next month or so.  This will cut our hosting fees significantly, while providing a more flexible environment for growth.  To give you an idea, at Amazon we would be able to move the site to larger server instances in an hour, where this is impossible in a traditional dedicated server environment.

I know that’s a bit technical and many might be scratching their heads, but suffice to say, at TLF, we’re being proactive to cut costs so that we won’t ever have to send an email like JPG Mag did this morning.

We currently earn revenue in three ways: ads on the site, affiliate sales in the reviews area, and subscriptions.

We’d like to take the time to thank again all of our subscribers.  Your contribution goes a long way to keep the site alive and healthy.  Thank you.

I’m a JPG refugee who has just joined here and also Flicker. Hopefully we can keep the community we built at JPG going in some context. I look forward to getting to know The Lens Flare. =)

Hi Cindy, Welcome to TLF.. I was also a JPG member but luckily I only had 5 or 6 photos there. I could not believe they were closing, I thought JPG was growing and doing great. I did just read that there might be a glimmer of hope with other people looking at taking it over.

Well I just dropped by JPGmag and the latests news is that they have had some offers to take over and are working through the weekend to finalize their offers. So they are still on-line and hoping for the best. It looks like I removed my 5 photos and account a little too early DUH… That’s what I get for jumping the gun..
