Method to the madness - organizing TLF image pages
I’ve recently made a few changes to the gallery image pages to make it a little more logical.
This logic started bouncing around my head since I added the 3 ‘related pictures’ to the bottom the gallery page. The first version had 3 related pictures from the site, but not the person. After criticism of this feature, I changed it to be 3 random pictures from the same artist.
That got me thinking, and I realized there are two competing goals of that page. First, the artist wants somebody to view their pictures. They rightly believe that when somebody is looking at their picture, they should be presented with easy options for a person to continue to look at more of their pictures. Second, the rest of the artists on the site would like people on the site to find them and look at their pictures.
With that in mind, I’ve reorganized the page by changing the placement of a few things. I’ve made it so the left column is focused on the picture and the artist who made it. The right column is for people to browse the site as a whole. To do this, I moved the detail images from the right side to underneath the larger picture, left the random pictures by the same artist at the bottom in the left column, and added the scrolling related pictures to the upper right hand side.
Hopefully, this helps explain why the related pictures in the scrolling area aren’t necessarily by the same artist. It’s a way to get people to browse around the site and discover people and pictures that they might have missed.
